Vascular Access Education Program

ORN | Ontario Renal Network » Info for Health Providers » Body and Vascular Access » Vascular Access Education Program

We have made it a priority to ensure that patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) receive safe and high quality dialysis access. Through a partnership with the De Souza Institute we can provide dialysis nurses in CKD programs across Ontario with centralized access to the Vascular Access Education Program. This program ensures that nurses and others who cannulate have access to high-quality education that is both comprehensive and consistent in delivering safe care.

After completing the course, participants will learn to:

  • Explain the guidelines for vascular access and describe the rationale behind them
  • Describe the types of arteriovenous fistulae and identify access sites, complications and management
  • Describe the types and use of arteriovenous grafts and identify surgical procedures, complications and management
  • Describe the rope ladder and buttonhole cannulation techniques including pre-cannulation assessment for both techniques
  • Describe the types of central hemodialysis catheters and identify indications, placement sites, complications and management

More details and online registration can be found on the Ontario Renal Network Vascular Access Education Program course page.
